Fire Curtains for Doors

Fire curtains are an excellent candidate to replace fire doors in new installations, as well as upgrade and replacement requirements. A fire curtain is hidden above the ceiling, and deploys via a signal from the fire alarm system. For this reason there is no visible door during normal circumstances, and there is no door jam or frame in the way. Therefore, you have the full use of the full hallway height and width, and enjoy an open hallway.

In situations where doors that are used to control access, such as hospitals, retirement homes, schools, public facilities, and restaurants, fire doors present a major source of obstruction. Replacing the fire doors opens up the traffic flows and reduces the obstacles to maneuver through and around.

Fire Curtains provide the following advantages over fire doors:

  • Opens Hallways: Because the installation is recessed, the full width of the hallway can be put to use. Doors and door jams are eliminated.
  • Easily Retractable: In the event of emergency egress, an exit button can be provided.
  • Two-Stage Descent: When the design demands, the fire curtain can initially be partially deployed (typically stopping at 6 feet 8 inches), after which the curtain will remain at that height for a specified, pre-programmed period of time, after which it will fully deploy. This two-stage "intelligence" is another major advantage of fire curtain technology.
  • Fail Safe: The curtains do not require power mains to deploy. In the event that the main power or back-up generator fails, the smoke and fire curtains will operate independently and deploy as directed by the alarm system. Should the alarm panel be compromised, the fail-safe design will still deploy the curtains.

In an environment where seconds can matter, where assistance to open doors is limited, it makes the utmost sense to install Fire Curtains.

Fire Curtains are certified to UL 10B and 10C, and in testing have a rating of 270 minutes at 1000° C. The wire-reinforced fabric was subjected to a heat flux density test.

The following results were recorded at 1.0 m away from the curtain:

15 Minutes- 1.6KW/m2
30 Minutes - 2.6KW/m2
60 Minutes - 4.4KW/m2

From the above data it can be calculated using a formula from the SFPE Handbook, Section 2, that it would be possible for building occupants to safely pass a 6.0m wide fire curtain at a distance of 1.0 m after a period of 60 minutes.

The head box is manufactured from 1.2mm galvanized steel, the box can be powder coated to any standard RAL finish. The standard bottom bar is manufactured from mild steel angle with an overall dimension of 42mm having a weight of 1.76 Kg per linear meter. The "T" bar can be powder coated to any standard RAL finish. Each fire curtain usage requires the installation of side channels, which are mechanical guides that are recessing into the side walls.

We at U.S. Smoke & Fire Curtain believe that fire curtains are the future of fire-safe doorway technology, and we are here to help you with your solutions.
