Description:

SD60GS® Fire Protective smoke curtains are considered "smoke barriers" in the IBC. The SD60GS® will deploy to the floor. The SD60GS® utilizes side guides (rails) that are recessed into the wall cavity or flush with the face of drywall. The headbox is bespoke with two types, single roller and multi-roller depending of width of opening.

Technical Information:

Robust Construction- Headbox manufactured 18-gauge steel, all glass textile with polyurethane coating- The complete assembly is listed which is the headbox, fabric, motor and bottom bar.
Accessible Maintenance- Removable bottom cover plate of headbox at ceiling for access to the low voltage motor and fabric.
Single Roller Head Box Sizes- 7-inch by 7-inch headbox for single roller system up to 12 feet in length and 10-foot drop height (refer to headbox sizing chart) 9-inches by 9-inch headbox for single roller system up to 12-feet in length and 20-foot drop height (refer to headbox sizing chart)
Multi-Roller Head Box Types and Sizes- 11-inch by 7-inch (under and over roller) type or 7-inches by 11-inches (side by side roller). Depending on the space in the plenum, selection will be based on space constraints above ceiling
Side Guides- Factory Etch Primed, 2-inches by 4-inches
Length and Drop Height Limits- Length 146 feet, Drop Height 45 feet
UL 864 listed Battery Back Up- Standard 2 12-volt batteries in UL 864 listed Control Panel and Motor Controller typically 40-feet away from Curtain head box for 14-2 low voltage wiring, 12-2 low voltage wiring for 80-feet away from Curtain headbox.
Control Panel -- connected directly to Addressable Fire Alarm system by closed contact that opens on fire signal from Smoke/IR detector. The contact type must be volt free, dry contact. Each Control Panel draws 7 amps. Control Panel requires 120 volts, typically a 20-amp circuit breaker. The circuit shall be a dedicated circuit marked life safety. Each control panel can control 4 motors. Each curtain roller utilizes 1 motor. If the curtain requires up to 8 motors, then a second Control Panel will be wired in series. If the curtain requires 12 motors, then a third Control Panel will be wired in series. Up to 9 Control Panels may be wired in series.
Smoke Detector Activation- the Smoke/IR detector wiring can be wired directly to the Control panel if there is no central fire alarm system in the building.
Egress- Egress options, are two stage descent where in stage 1 curtain dwell 6' 8" AFF for 1-minute then stage 2 curtain deploys to floor. Emergency Retract Button (EUB). Button is placed on wall up to 3-feet away from curtain at 36"- 42" AFF.
Egress- optional pass-through slot for walkable egress. This is not handicapped wheelchair egress, and it is not an integral swing door. The integral swing door would be another model such as the Hose Stream 120® First Responder with Integral Swing door. This is listed to UL 10B for 90-minutes and is hose stream tested.
Obstruction Sensor- Obstruction sensor option is a class 1 laser beam that is set next to bottom bar to annunciate after a period of 15-minutes to warn of an obstruction. This sensor can be connected to building management system (BMS relay) for monitoring.

Can I use the SD60GS® for an opening in a fire wall or fire barrier?

No, openings in fire walls and fire barriers must be UL 10B with the hose stream test per IBC Table 716. This product category is tested to UL 10D which does not include the hose stream test thus if the opening is a fire partition wall or smoke barrier wall then the UL 10D listed system is appropriate. A UL 10D product tested to 20-minutes, 1-hour, 90-minutes, or 2-hours to UL 10D all default to UL 10B 20-minute (no hose).

Does the fabric come in various colors?

The fabric comes in gray only.

Does the headbox come in different colors?

Yes, Ral colors, white, gray, black standard and all other Ral Colors optional. USSF recommends factory-etched primed and paint in field so that the sheen will match better.

Can the side guides be fully recessed in walls and what is the minimum size?

Side guides are a manufactured steel extrusion 2-inches in width and 4-inches in depth. The side guide can be recessed into the wall cavity typically 2 to 3-inches.

What is the drop speed of the curtain?

NFPA 80 Chapter 21 Fire Protective Curtains states that drop speed must be 6-inches to 24-inches per second.

Can the SD60GS® fire protective curtain be installed exterior to the building?

Yes, this application is for glass protection.

Can the SD60GS® fire protective curtain cover my house from the roof down to protect my home in the event of a wildfire?

Yes, the curtain can protect the home from embers, but the extent of wildfire could easily overcome any fire protection measures.

Can I use my curtain to deploy and retract by a remote key switch, as I am using it to close off an area?

Yes, the curtain can be controlled by a remote key switch in view of the curtain to deploy and retract the curtain. There is an optional "door mode" software that will allow the user to deploy the curtain without any beeping of the control panel which would normally beep when the curtain is deployed.

Does the curtain automatically reset when the smoke/IR detector or fire alarm system reset to normal non-alert mode?

Yes, the system is automatic. Once the closed contact from FAS opens, the curtain drops to its operational position and when the FAS contact closes, the curtain motors engage, and the curtain retracts back into its headbox.

Can I use a pass-through slot egress for a wheel chaired person?

No, for ADA compliance, please choose the Hose Stream 120® First Responder or Hose Stream 180® First Responder with Integral Swing door for opening in a fire wall or fire barrier. For an opening in a smoke barrier, the SD240GS® with integral swing door is also an option.
