Stages & Auditoriums: Smoke & Fire Curtain Applications

Our smoke curtains are readily applied to the needs of custom-made proscenium fire safety applications for use in theaters, stages, school auditoriums and other large performance and observation arenas. Most building codes require the use of fire safety curtains, which are lowered in the event of fire on, or backstage to protect the audience against the threat of fire and smoke until the area is evacuated.

Smoke curtains provide an elegant solution for an elegant environment. They are recessed and can appear simply as a slit in the walls and ceilings. With a height of up to 30 feet and a width up to 60 feet, a single curtain can be used to cover an expansive proscenium, and can be deployed and retracted in a matter of seconds.

Applications include new installations or replacement of existing asbestos or other curtains in proscenium theaters, stages, auditoriums, schools, and public performance and observation arenas. Our curtains are fabricated from asbestos-free material, which resists fire, heat, and smoke.

Smoke curtains are deployed automatically, as directed by the applicable smoke detection and alarm system, triggered by a fusible link, or can also be manually deployed and retracted by a key switch. The curtains utilize a steel track mounted to the side of the proscenium wall for operation. This configuration requires only 14 inches above the ceiling to accommodate the curtain head box.

We at U.S. Smoke & Fire believe that all theaters, stages, school auditoriums and other large performance and observation arenas in the United States need to be evaluated for more effective smoke management systems using this smoke curtain technology.
